Many procurement organizations today have recognized the benefits of consolidating suppliers and service providers for improved leverage and cost savings. At the same time, there are areas of business that remain largely untapped and require specialized suppliers or service providers to meet unique needs. One of the most important and fastest-growing of such business areas is Aftermarket Logistics.
According to a report from AMR Research in 2005, “The cost of not improving the aftermarket component of the business is lost sales and weakened customer relations. Instead of a customer for life, companies will find that third-party providers have stronger, longer-term ties to customers.”
The aftermarkets business in Asia is on a high growth trajectory, fuelled by an ongoing shift of OEM’s (Original Equipment Manufacturer) towards low cost destinations in Asia.
For South East Asia, 83% of the aftermarket logistics activity occurs in Singapore and Malaysia. Singapore has a 60% share of the SEA market, primarily due to its regional hub status. While certain key industries have outsourced of aftermarket logistics to 3PLs for several years, the service offering is increasingly evolving towards creating integrated or customized solutions for different industries. Industry players have understood that aftermarket logistics can complement revenue realization rather than simply being another cost factor.
As one of the components of aftermarket logistics, reverse logistics involves the flow of surplus, damaged or unwanted material or equipment back through the supply chain after meeting customer’s demand. Determining the size of the Aftermarket and Reverse Logistics Service market requires that a company truly understand the dimensions and dynamics of the market.
Opportunities in terms of designing and managing these reverse flows to ensure that the material is handled in an environmentally responsible way are also on the rise. However, retailers and vendors face the challenge of processing these returns at a level of proficiency that allows for quick, efficient and cost-effective collection and return of merchandise. It is the logistics company’s responsibility to shorten the link from return origination to the time of resell. And because of the connection between reverse logistics and customer retention, it has become a key component within Service Lifecycle Management.

Launch of the Reverse Logistics Solutions Lab
The event would also serve as a stage to launch Singapore’s first Reverse Logistics Lab at the Singapore Management University. The lab will contribute to the industry by carrying out research in specific areas within Aftermarket and Reverse Logistics. It aims to be a key knowledge base for the logistics industry in Singapore and the region.
